Just a Piece of Cake - RHINO Short Film
Featuring Mike Pixley + Sarah McDaid
A short film on the subtleties of grief and death.
Just A Piece of Cake features a man reflecting on the death of his father, at dusk on the family farm, after everyone has long departed the funeral service.
The film explores the relationship between emotions and physical artifacts, and how we imbue meaning to inanimate objects due to their psychological significance.
In the end, it's just a piece of cake.

Why did we make this film?
In a very run of the mill project debrief, we realized we still had a classic ‘85 C10 on our hands from “The Letter”, and so we decided to build a short film around it. We challenged ourselves to write something that could be shot in a day, and with a total production budget (minus crew) of $1000.
So the 1K:1Day was born.

Why did we make this film? Because we want to film our own stories and our own ideas, whether they are fictional narrative dramas or truth-seeking documentaries. We realized that we hadn’t put out anything since 2016. Not letting that happen again. AND because making movies is fun. -Kevin Romeo A Rhino Production Featuring Jake Maxwell, Jeremy Angeletti, Maheen Fillar, Seun Jubril, Jonathan Jer...

Cop propaganda. Watch and you’ll laugh hysterically how the 22nd most dangerous job in the USA looks. I was a small engine mechanic and that is the 18th most dangerous job in the country. Are used to live in Kalamazoo. I wish I still did so I could yell some more stuff at these people who claim to be cops. They are swine I guarantee you. How many of them have testified against another swine in a court of law for brutality. They never seem to see anything. Like Sergeant Schults said “I see nothing“.

The Good Cop" Aren't they on the endangered species list? It's been quite sometime since I've encountered one. I've had people tell me there are still a few in existence but are hard to spot and very elusive. They used to be everywhere when I was a kid, but not so much now. ......Sad.

I'm a student studying journalism. I've never had a big passion for creating multimedia, but something about Luke Bell's story I felt strongly about. Like Kevin, I'm also from the Midwest, but probably even more far removed from Luke than him. I am not from a working class background, aside from my parents who immigrated and supported themselves in this country. I had just really been getting into country music - with some imposter syndrome all the while - when I started listening to W.B. Walker's Old Soul Radio Show because of his connection to Colter Wall. That's when I heard an episode where some folks covered "Loretta" as a tribute to Luke. From there, I listened to that album and was blown away. "Sometimes" really resonated with me. It might have been on Saving Country Music when I found out his story after looking him up. That was there I really connected. Myself and my community have been impacted by struggles with mental health, and that is where my connection with Luke Bell's music became that special something only music, and particularly this timeless style of it, began. I thought it was a story exactly deserving of a documentary, and if I ever survived school, something that I would love to see and even make if I had to. So seeing that trailer was incredible - I really don't even remember how it came my way, but probably some of the old clips I'd seen of him on UA-cam. I was hesitant at first contributing to a Kickstarter, as I'd never done it before, but this podcast has done a lot to ease some worries. Best of luck to you Kevin and Matt and everyone at Rhino, I hope I can support this project in more ways!
